A new set of guidelines has been published by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) that aims to help businesses cope with the current heat wave - though a business loan could also help companies cope financially.
The measures state small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have a duty to provide offices with a reasonable temperature for employees - however critics have called for greater clarity over the guidelines.
Mary Broughton national health and safety chairman for the FSB, said: "In many businesses the hot weather has boosted sales but it is important that firms take effective measures to make work comfortable and prevent absenteeism so that the firm can continue to operate without interruption or disputes.
"With fans and air conditioning available to buy or rent at very competitive prices this is an option that many businesses will choose to take."
The FSB further advises SMEs to make sure that air-conditioning equipment is well maintained and also called for more investment in air cooling and ceiling fans - all of which could be purchased with business loans.
